Sir John Denton French VC (1852-1925) was a decorated British soldier and military commander, best known for his leadership during the Second Boer War and the early stages of World War I. In this evocative portrait, Sir John is depicted in a patriotic manner, surrounded by the iconic symbols of British pride and history - the Union Jack. The Union Jack, the national flag of the United Kingdom, is prominently displayed behind Sir John, its red, white, and blue stripes and crosses symbolizing the unity of the four constituent home nations: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
