Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), an intrepid explorer and journalist, is captured in this striking portrait taken in 1890. Stanley is best known for his role in the search for the missing explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, in Africa. In 1871, Stanley set out on a mission to find Livingstone and bring news of his whereabouts back to the world. After a grueling journey through the heart of the African continent, Stanley finally located Livingstone in Ujiji, Tanganyika, in November 1871. The famous meeting between the two explorers was marked by the now-iconic exchange, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Stanley's adventures in Africa did not end there. He went on to explore large areas of the Congo Basin, establishing the Congo Free State in 1885, which he ruled as a personal fiefdom until 1891. Stanley's exploits in Africa earned him both admiration and criticism, as he was praised for his exploration and journalism but also condemned for his brutal treatment of the native population. This portrait of Stanley, taken in the later years of his career, shows a man with a steely gaze and a confident air. His bushy mustache and neatly trimmed beard are characteristic of the era, and his formal attire reflects his status as a respected figure in the world of exploration.
