Baghdad Capture Frederick Lieutenant Maude Stanley War Time Ww 1

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Lieutenant General Sir Frederick Stanley Maude (1864-1917) stands proudly in his full military regalia, a testament to his distinguished career as a British army officer during World War I. Maude, who served in the British Army from 1883 to 1917, is best known for his role as the Commander of the British troops that captured Baghdad in March 1917. During the early stages of the war, Maude served as the General Officer Commanding the 1st Division, which saw action in the Battle of Mons and the Retreat from Mons. He later went on to command the 27th Division during the Battle of Neuve-Chapelle. However, it was his leadership of the Eastern Expeditionary Force in Mesopotamia that would cement his place in military history. Maude's forces faced numerous challenges during their campaign in Mesopotamia, including harsh desert conditions, disease, and a determined enemy. Despite these obstacles, Maude's troops pressed on, eventually capturing the strategic city of Baghdad on March 11, 1917. Maude's victory was a significant turning point in the war, as it opened up a new front against the Ottoman Empire and paved the way for the eventual defeat of Turkey. In this photograph, Maude wears the uniform of a full general, complete with his distinctive red sash and star, signifying his high rank. His stern expression and confident posture convey a sense of determination and leadership, making this an iconic image of a great war time commander. Sir Frederick Stanley Maude's legacy as a British army officer and the Commander of the troops that captured Baghdad during World War I continues to be celebrated and remembered.
