EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases a series of exquisite silhouette portraits created by the renowned artist Auguste Edouart during his tour of the United States in the 1840s. The portraits depict four individuals, each captured in the distinctive style of Edouart's silhouette art. On the left, we find Samuel Foote, whose portrait was taken in New York on October 31st, 1839. Next to him is John Foote, whose portrait was taken just a year earlier, on May 16th, 1840. Euphemia Foote, a young girl, is depicted in the middle, her portrait also taken on May 16th, 1840. The final portrait in this series is of J. Nims, a portrait painter, whose silhouette was taken on the same day as Euphemia's. Edouart's silhouette portraits were a popular form of art during the 19th century, particularly during the Victorian era. The lengthy process involved the artist cutting the silhouette by hand, using a small knife, against a dark background. The resulting portraits were full of detail and depth, capturing the essence of the subject's character and personality. These silhouette portraits offer a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the lives of these individuals during the 19th century. The image of Samuel Foote, with his serious expression and well-groomed appearance, contrasts with the playful and carefree image of young John Foote. Euphemia's portrait, with her delicate features and soft expression, is a testament to Edouart's skill in capturing the essence of childhood. And J. Nims, as a fellow artist, would have appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship of his own silhouette portrait. This photograph print is a beautiful and intriguing reminder of the artistry and creativity of Auguste Edouart and the unique and enduring appeal of silhouette portraits.
