The photograph, taken in April 1851, is believed to depict the brig Renovation sighting the supposed remains of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition ships, the Erebus and Terror, which were last heard of in July 1845. The Franklin Expedition, a British polar exploration venture led by Sir John Franklin, set sail from Greenhithe, England, on May 19, 1845, with the goal of discovering the Northwest Passage. The expedition consisted of two ships, the Erebus and Terror, and a crew of 129 men. They were last reported to have been in Baffin Bay, but despite extensive search efforts, no sign of the ships or their crew was found until this sighting by the brig Renovation. The image of the icebound ships serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that unfolded during the Franklin Expedition. The crew, stranded in the Arctic, faced unimaginable hardships, including scurvy, starvation, and the harsh polar climate.
