EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of General William T. Sherman's infamous March to the Sea, as his Union troops enter Savannah, Georgia in December 1864. The Civil War's most destructive military campaign had begun in November, with Sherman leading his forces on a scorched earth march through Georgia, destroying infrastructure and livestock to deny supplies to the Confederate army. By the time they reached Savannah, the Union army had effectively cut off Confederate General Johnston's forces from their supply lines, forcing them to abandon their position. The occupation of Savannah marked the culmination of Sherman's ruthless march, earning him both military acclaim and undying hatred from the Confederate population. While the military strategy was justifiable in the context of the war, the devastation wrought upon the civilian population left a lasting impact. Homes, churches, and businesses were burned, and thousands of civilians were left destitute. This historical print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a poignant view of the aftermath of the march. The image shows Union soldiers standing in the streets of Savannah, their weapons at the ready, as they survey the damage wrought upon the city. The desolation is palpable, with buildings reduced to rubble and the streets strewn with debris. The Union flag flies proudly above the city, a symbol of victory and control. Despite the controversy surrounding Sherman's tactics, the march through Georgia is now recognized as a turning point in the Civil War, paving the way for the Union's eventual victory. This image provides a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring impact of military strategy on history.
