EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Shepherds Informed," marks a significant milestone in the history of journalism and color printing. The Illustrated London News, a renowned English weekly newspaper, made its debut in colored journalism on December 22, 1855, with the first series of coloured printed pictures. These images, which appeared in the Christmas supplement, were the first of their kind in any journal and represented a groundbreaking achievement in English color printing. Produced by George Cargill Leighton, the woodblocks and coloring were rather crude but proved enormously successful. So successful, in fact, that a second batch of color prints was swiftly commissioned by Herbert Ingram, appearing on May 10, 1856. This print, depicting the shepherds being informed of Jesus' birth by the angel Gabriel, is a testament to the historical importance of this moment in print media. The Nativity scene, with its biblical narrative and intricate details, is a beautiful example of the early attempts at color printing. The shepherds, with their watches in hand, gaze in awe at the angel, who hovers above the newborn Jesus. The scene is filled with a sense of wonder and reverence, capturing the essence of the Christmas story. The Illustrated London News' decision to introduce color printing was a bold move that revolutionized the way news and events were presented. This print, with its rich colors and intricate details, serves as a reminder of the historical significance of this moment in print media and the enduring appeal of the Christmas story.
