EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur and vastness of the Moorhall Estate, which was set to be auctioned off in 1861. The focal point of the image is the magnificent Moor Hall mansion, a freehold messuage that had been lovingly rebuilt and modernized by Samuel Deakin, esquire. Currently occupied by Mr Joseph Crossland, this stately residence exudes elegance and charm. Surrounding Moor Hall are sprawling gardens and pleasure grounds that add to its allure. Additionally, there are barns, stables, coach houses, farm servant cottages (five in number), and various outbuildings that complete this impressive estate. The Hermit Royd homestead is also featured in this print along with 162 acres of arable land, meadows, pastures comprising Fairhurst Farm, Moor Hall Farm, and Hermit Roy Farm. Furthermore, there are 20 acres of thriving woods and plantations encompassing Hare Hills Woodlands as well as Bitholms Woodlands. The photograph offers a glimpse into the natural beauty surrounding the estate with mentions of Wilkin Woodlands and Firth Woods alongside Ewden Beck Valley. The presence of rivers such as Don River adds to the picturesque landscape captured within this image.
