Shalmaneser IV, the mighty King of Assyria, triumphantly leads captives from the conquered city of Samaria following his victorious attack on Hoshea, the last king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, in 725 BC. The historical scene depicts the East Asian monarch in regal attire, seated on his ornate chariot, as he surveys his victorious army and the spoils of war. The captives, many of whom are women and children, are seen being led away, their hands bound, their faces etched with fear and despair. The procession moves eastward, signaling the continuation of the Assyrian conquest of the ancient Near East. Shalmaneser IV's attack on Samaria marked the end of the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the beginning of the Assyrian domination of the region. The event is documented in the annals of Shalmaneser IV and in the biblical books of Kings and Chronicles.
