Shah Jahan I: The Melancholic Monarch in Captivity (1666) This exquisite miniature painting depicts the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan I, renowned for his grand architectural projects, including the iconic Taj Mahal, in the twilight of his life. Born in 1592, Shah Jahan ascended the throne in 1628 following the death of his father, Jahangir.
