This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite for seven intrepid members of the Royal Naval Division (RND) during their service in the First World War. The RND, formed in September 1914, was created to support the army on land, making them unique among the naval forces of the time. Here, the sailors are seen outside their tents in a sunlit field, enjoying a well-deserved break from the rigors of war. The uniforms of the RND are distinctively different from those of their naval counterparts, with the men wearing khaki drill uniforms and leather helmets, reflecting their role as soldiers as well as sailors.
