EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: The Sepulchre of Septimius Severus: A Grand Mausoleum on the Borders of Palatine and Caelian Hills, Rome The Sepulchre of Septimius Severus, also known as Sepulchre of Severus or Septizonium, is an impressive ancient Roman mausoleum located on the border of Palatine and Caelian Hills in Rome. Dating back to the 3rd century AD, this architectural masterpiece was built as a tomb for the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and his family. Septimius Severus, born in Leptis Magna, Libya, rose to power in AD 193 and ruled Rome until his death in AD 211. During his reign, he undertook extensive building projects throughout the empire, including the construction of this grand mausoleum in his adopted hometown. The mausoleum, which is believed to have been designed by the architects Decimus and Quintus Statius, is a remarkable example of ancient Roman architecture. Measuring approximately 100 meters in diameter and 48 meters in height, it was one of the largest mausoleums of the ancient world. The structure is composed of three concentric rings, each with a different architectural style, reflecting the emperor's desire to unite the various cultures of the empire. The outermost ring, which is the largest, is adorned with Doric columns, while the middle ring features Ionic columns, and the innermost ring is decorated with Corinthian columns. The central chamber, located at the very top, is where the remains of Septimius Severus and his family were interred. The Sepulchre of Septimius Severus, a testament to the grandeur and power of the Roman Empire, stands as a significant archaeological site and a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and tourists alike. Despite the passage of centuries, the mausoleum continues to captivate the imagination and inspire awe, offering a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of ancient Rome.
