1840 Chapel Istanbul Sepulchral Sultana Valide

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative image captures the Sepulchral Chapel, also known as the Sepulchral Mosque or the Sepulchral Tomb of Sultana Valide, located in the historic Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey. Built between 1665 and 1668, the chapel was commissioned by Sultana Valide Sultan, the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, as a mausoleum for herself and her family. The Sepulchral Chapel is a stunning example of Ottoman architecture, with its intricate tilework, calligraphy, and geometric designs. The exterior is adorned with blue and green Iznik tiles, while the interior features ornate marble decorations and intricate stucco work. The central dome is supported by four large piers, each topped with a gilded medallion. The Sepulchral Chapel was designed by the renowned Ottoman architect Sinan Aga, who also designed many other famous structures in Istanbul, including the Sultanahmet Mosque and the Rustem Pasha Mosque. The chapel's design reflects the high level of craftsmanship and artistic achievement that characterized the Ottoman Empire during the late 17th century. The Sepulchral Chapel has been a popular destination for tourists and locals alike for centuries, and continues to be a source of inspiration for artists, architects, and historians. The image captured here offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire, transporting us back in time to an era of grandeur and beauty." This photograph, taken in the mid-19th century, provides a rare glimpse into the Sepulchral Chapel before the extensive restoration work that was carried out in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The image offers a unique perspective on the chapel's architectural details and historical significance, making it an invaluable addition to any collection of Ottoman history or Istanbul architecture.
