This historical print depicts Selim III, the Sultan of Turkey, although the printed caption mistakenly identifies him as Ridley. Selim III ruled from 1789 to 1807 and is known for his efforts to modernize the Ottoman Empire during a period of significant political and social change. Despite the erroneous caption, this image provides a fascinating glimpse into Turkish history during the early 19th century.
The portrait captures Selim III in regal attire, exuding power and authority befitting a ruler of his time. His reign was marked by attempts to reform the military, administrative, and economic systems of the empire in order to strengthen its position on the world stage. However, he faced opposition from conservative forces within the empire who resisted these changes.
In 1808, Selim III was deposed in a coup led by rebellious Janissaries who were opposed to his reforms. He was ultimately succeeded by Mahmud II after being imprisoned and later murdered.
Despite being mislabeled as Ridley in this particular print, Selim III's legacy as an ambitious reformer continues to be remembered in Turkish history. This image serves as a reminder of his contributions and struggles during a pivotal period for the Ottoman Empire.
