1794 1886 Cornwallis Peer Rous Sporting Stradbroke

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the second Earl of Stradbroke, John Edward Cornwallis Rous (1794-1886), in full hunting attire, embodying the essence of the English peerage and the noble sporting tradition. The Earl, who succeeded to the title in 1831, is depicted here in the prime of his life, exuding confidence and authority. His keen interest in hunting was a reflection of the pastime's enduring popularity among the aristocracy during the Victorian era. Born on March 1, 1794, John Edward Cornwallis Rous was the eldest son of the first Earl of Stradbroke, Charles Cornwallis Rous. He was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge, before embarking on a military career. He served in the Peninsular War, where he was wounded at the Battle of Vitoria in 1813. After leaving the military, he devoted himself to his estates and the pursuit of country sports. The photograph, taken in 1886, captures the Earl in his element, with his hounds at his feet and a gun slung over his shoulder. The setting, with its rolling hills and verdant foliage, underscores the idyllic rural lifestyle enjoyed by the English aristocracy during this period. The Earl's impeccable attire, from his tweed jacket and jodhpurs to his leather boots and riding hat, speaks to the meticulous attention to detail that characterized the sporting peer's wardrobe. The Earl of Stradbroke's legacy extends beyond his hunting prowess. He was a generous patron of the arts, supporting the Royal Academy and the National Gallery. He also played a role in the development of the railways in Suffolk, which helped to bring economic prosperity to the region. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable man who embodied the spirit of the English country gentry in the late Victorian era.
