This evocative photograph captures a moment in time from the late 19th century as young boys take part in a seamanship class on board the Training Ship Wellesley, docked on the River Tyne at North Shields in Northumberland. Established in 1868 by local businessmen, led by James Hall, as a charitable institution to provide shelter for Tyneside waifs and train young men for naval service, the Wellesley became the base for the organization from 1874. The boys, dressed in uniform, are seen intently learning the practical skills of seamanship under the watchful eye of a supervisor. The deck of the ship is filled with the sights and sounds of rigging, transporting the boys back in time to an era of sail and oar. The Victorian-era institution, which housed up to 150 boys, offered a vital alternative to the workhouses and orphanages of the time. The institution's commitment to education and training continued until a fire in 1914 forced it to close and relocate to become the Wellesley Nautical School on land.
