In this ancient Roman painting, the triumphant figure of Publius Cornelius Scipio, later known as Africanus, leads a massive triumphal procession through the streets of Rome. The year is 203 BC, and Scipio's military successes against the Carthaginians in the Second Punic War have earned him this grand display of victory. The painting captures the grandeur and opulence of the Roman triumph, a ceremony reserved for the most successful military commanders. Scipio, dressed in a toga purpurea, the deep purple cloak signifying his high rank, rides in a quadrigae, a four-horse chariot, pulled by white horses adorned with gold trappings. Behind him, Roman soldiers carry the spoils of war, including captured Carthaginian elephants and gold and silver treasures. The procession includes captive Carthaginian nobles, who walk in chains and wear the pilleus cornutus, a conical hat symbolizing their defeat and enslavement.
