Sputnik Collection

Sputnik was the first artificial satellite to be launched into Earth's orbit, and it marked a major milestone in. Launched by the Soviet Union on October 4th, 1957, it was a 58 cm diameter sphere made of aluminium alloy with four antennae attached. It orbited the Earth every 96 minutes at an altitude of 900 km and transmitted radio signals back to Earth.
