Wolf of Siena

Detail of the 14thtthh century mosaic set in the marble pavement of the Duomo of Siena. It shows the she-wolf suckling the twins Senio and Aschio, the sons of Remus (brother of Romulus) who, according to legend, were the founders of Rome. Legend has it that the origins of Siena were due to the twins, Senio (after who the city is named) and Aschio, fleeing from their uncle Romulus in Rome. The citys coat of arms symbolises the wolf and the twins. It was the Etruscans who established the town of Siena

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing detail of the 14th-century mosaic found in the marble pavement of the Duomo of Siena. The focal point is none other than the iconic "Wolf of Siena" - a symbol deeply rooted in legend and history. Depicted here is the she-wolf, tenderly nursing twins Senio and Aschio, who were believed to be descendants of Remus, brother of Rome's legendary founder Romulus. According to ancient tales, these twins fled from their uncle Romulus in Rome and sought refuge in what would later become known as Siena. In fact, it was their escape that led to the establishment of this remarkable city by the Etruscans. Today, Siena proudly bears its coat of arms featuring both the wolf and the twins as a testament to its mythical origins. The intricate mosaic work beautifully captures not only an extraordinary moment but also embodies centuries worth of symbolism and emblematic significance. It serves as a powerful reminder that art can transcend time by preserving stories that shape our cultural heritage. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back through history - witnessing not only an enchanting scene but also contemplating themes such as multiple birth, infant nutrition, iconography, and even Etruscan influence on Italian civilization. This stunning print from Science Photo Library invites us to delve into a world where legends intertwine with reality – leaving us captivated by its timeless allure.
