White rhinoceros horn removal C015 / 0659
White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) horn removal, Umhlametsi Private Nature Reserve, South Africa. These horns were removed from a white rhinoceros as part of an anti-poaching operation. The horn is made entirely of keratin protein so removal does not harm the animal but the team are careful to leave a ten centimetre stump to avoid infection. Despite horn removal, poachers will still attempt to kill the animals for the remaining stump or as an act of vengeance. The removed horn is sampled for DNA, micro-shipped and stored securely

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures a moment of hope in the ongoing battle against rhino poaching. In the heart of Umhlametsi Private Nature Reserve, South Africa, an anti-poaching operation is underway to remove the horn from a white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). The team carefully carries out this procedure with utmost precision and care. The white rhinoceros's horn, composed entirely of keratin protein, is removed to deter poachers who seek these valuable appendages. Remarkably, this process does not harm the animal; however, a ten centimeter stump is left behind to prevent infection. Despite these efforts, poachers remain relentless in their pursuit. They will stop at nothing to kill these magnificent creatures for either the remaining stump or as an act of revenge. To combat this threat and gather crucial information for conservation purposes, the removed horn undergoes DNA sampling and micro-chipping before being securely stored. In this tranquilized state, surrounded by the breathtaking African countryside backdrop near Hoedspruit, wildlife experts work tirelessly alongside Protrack's Anti Rhino Poaching Team. Their dedication ensures that every possible measure is taken to protect these endangered animals from further harm. This photograph serves as a stark reminder of both humanity's destructive impact on nature and our unwavering commitment towards its preservation. It symbolizes resilience in the face of adversity and highlights our collective responsibility to safeguard Earth's precious fauna for generations to come.
