White rhinoceros conservation C015 / 0656

White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) conservation, Umhlametsi Private Nature Reserve, South Africa. A veterinarian collects samples of rhinoceros horn for DNA analysis. Horns are removed as an anti poaching measure. The rhinoceros is first tracked from the air and darted with a tranquiliser. The horn, which is made entirely from keratin protein, is removed with a chainsaw at ten centimetres above the base. Rhinoceros horns are used as ornaments and for some traditional medicines. Despite horn removal, rhinoceroses are still killed by poachers for the remaining horn stub or out of vengeance

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a crucial moment in white rhinoceros conservation efforts at the Umhlametsi Private Nature Reserve in South Africa. In an effort to protect these magnificent creatures from poaching, a dedicated veterinarian is seen collecting samples of rhinoceros horn for DNA analysis. The process begins with tracking the rhinoceros from the air and tranquilizing it with a dart. Once sedated, the veterinarian carefully removes the horn using a chainsaw, leaving ten centimeters above its base. The horns, composed entirely of keratin protein, are highly sought after for their ornamental value and use in traditional medicines. Despite this drastic measure of removing their horns as an anti-poaching deterrent, rhinoceroses continue to be targeted by poachers out of vengeance or for any remaining stubs. This powerful image showcases both human intervention and collaboration between humans and animals in protecting endangered species. It highlights the tireless efforts being made to safeguard these iconic African creatures from extinction. Louise Murray's photograph serves as a reminder that conservationists are working tirelessly behind-the-scenes to ensure that future generations can witness these majestic animals roaming freely in their natural habitats.
