Wave energy converter, diagram
Wave energy converter. Diagram of the Pelamis wave energy converter, a unit that harnesses energy from the sea using cylindrical sections linked by hinged joints containing hydraulic rams (shown in the cutaways). As the Pelamis undulates with the waves, the motions of the hydraulic rams force a generator to rotate and generate electricity. The prototype was launched in 2004 at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland. Its performance was tested here before its installation as a commercial wave farm in Portugal in 2006
