Water bear, SEM C016 / 9087

Water bear (Echiniscus granulatus). Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a water bear, or tardigrade (phylum Tardigrada). Water bears are small, water-dwelling, segmented micro-animals with eight legs that live in damp habitats such as moss or lichen. They are classed as extremophiles as they can survive dry conditions by changing into a desiccated state, in which they can remain for many years. Whilst in this form (known as a tun) they can withstand the most extreme environments and can tolerate radiation levels as high as x1000 more than other animals, including humans. They have even been brought back alive after spending 10 days in the vacuum of space. Magnification: x80, when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible world of a water bear, also known as a tardigrade. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) captures the intricate details of this microscopic creature, specifically Echiniscus granulatus species. With its eight legs and segmented body, the water bear is perfectly adapted to thrive in damp habitats like moss or lichen. What makes these tiny organisms truly remarkable is their ability to survive extreme conditions. When faced with dry environments, they enter a desiccated state called a tun, which allows them to endure for years without water. In fact, they are classified as extremophiles due to their resilience in harsh surroundings that would be fatal for most other animals. Water bears possess an astonishing resistance to radiation levels that surpass those tolerated by humans and other creatures by up to 1000 times. They can even withstand the vacuum of space; some have been brought back alive after spending ten days in such conditions. The magnified image reveals every minute detail of this micro-animal's anatomy - from its limbs and claws to its head and mouth. This photograph not only highlights the beauty found within nature but also serves as a testament to the extraordinary adaptability and survival skills possessed by these fascinating creatures.
