Water bear, light micrograph C016 / 8581
Water bear, differential interference contrast (DIC) light micrograph. Water bears, or tardigrades, (phylum Tardigrada) are small, water-dwelling, segmented micro-animals with eight legs that live in damp habitats such as moss or lichen. They are classed as extremophiles as they can survive dry conditions by changing into a desiccated state, in which they can remain for many years. Whilst in this form (known as a tun) they can withstand the most extreme environments and can tolerate radiation levels as high as x1000 more than other animals, including humans. They have even been brought back alive after spending 10 days in the vacuum of space! Magnification x280, when printed 10 centimetres wide. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © FRANK FOX/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible world of water bears, also known as tardigrades. These small, segmented micro-animals with eight legs are found in various damp habitats like moss or lichen. What makes them truly extraordinary is their ability to survive in extreme conditions. Considered extremophiles, water bears can endure dry environments by entering a desiccated state called a tun. In this form, they can withstand the harshest surroundings for many years. They possess an astonishing resistance to radiation levels that surpass those tolerated by any other animal, including humans - up to x1000 more! Their resilience is so remarkable that they have even been revived after spending 10 days in the vacuum of space! The magnified image reveals intricate details of these fascinating creatures under differential interference contrast (DIC) light microscopy. With a magnification of x280 and printed at 10 centimeters wide, it offers us a glimpse into their microscopic world. Water bears hold immense significance in fields such as biology and microbiology due to their unique characteristics and survival mechanisms. As meiofauna inhabitants of aquatic ecosystems, they play an essential role within these delicate environments. This stunning photograph captured by Frank Fox from Science Photo Library beautifully encapsulates the wonder and complexity of these drought-resistant micro-animals. It serves as a reminder that life exists even in the most challenging circumstances and continues to amaze us with its adaptability and tenacity.
