Volcano at night
Volcanic eruption. Night time view of a Strombolian eruption of the south-east crater of Etna, a volcano on Sicily. The bright light at upper centre is the full Moon. Strombolian activity is characterised by frequent, even constant, release of lava and gas but without violent explosions. Mount Etna (3323 metres) is Europes largest active volcano with over 200 subsidiary cones. Although almost constantly active, major eruptive lava flows have occurred causing widespread damage to the surrounding areas. Photographed in October 1998
