Ventral foot pads and claws of a grey flesh fly

Foot pads of a fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the underside of the foot pads and claws of a grey flesh fly, Sarcophaga carnaria. The tip of the foot of the grey flesh fly consists of two rounded claws with two pads or cushions, called pulvilli, beneath them. Each pulvillus is covered with a furry coat of tenent" hairs (coloured light brown here). Tenent hairs secrete a sticky substance which enables the fly to land on smooth surfaces. For gripping onto rough surfaces, the grey flesh fly uses the large rounded claws found at the tip of each foot. Magnification: x56 at 5x7cm size. x195 at 8x10". EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate details of the ventral foot pads and claws of a grey flesh fly, scientifically known as Sarcophaga carnaria. Underneath the microscope, we are granted a close-up view of the underside of its foot pads and claws in stunning clarity. At first glance, we notice two rounded claws at the tip of each foot, accompanied by cushion-like structures called pulvilli. These pulvilli serve as support systems for the fly's landing maneuvers. Covered in a delicate coat of tenent hairs that appear light brown in color, they secrete a sticky substance enabling this remarkable insect to effortlessly land on smooth surfaces. However, when it comes to gripping onto rough terrains or surfaces, these resilient creatures rely on their large rounded claws found at the very end of each foot. These formidable appendages provide them with stability and traction during their explorations. With magnification levels reaching x56 at 5x7cm size and an impressive x195 at 8x10", this image not only highlights nature's microscopic wonders but also offers valuable insights into animal anatomy and behavior. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly insignificant organisms possess extraordinary adaptations that allow them to thrive within their ecosystems. Captured by Science Photo Library, this photograph is an exquisite testament to both scientific curiosity and artistic appreciation for wildlife photography.
