Z. elliptica has since been renamed Encephalartos caffer. Across top are the edible fruits of the calabash, fig and tamarind. This 19th-century artwork showcases a vibrant array of tropical plants, beautifully captured in monochrome. From left to right, the print features a calabash tree with its intriguingly shaped fruits (Crescentia sp. ), followed by the elegant betel nut palm (Areca catechu), a cycad now known as Encephalartos caffer (formerly Zamia elliptica), a majestic white fig tree (Ficus virens), and finally, a tamarind tree bearing its distinctive pods (Tamarindus indica). The top section of the print displays the edible fruits of the calabash, fig, and tamarind trees.
