EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases a vibrant array of tropical plants, beautifully captured in monochrome. From left to right, the print features a calabash tree with its intriguingly shaped fruits (Crescentia sp. ), followed by the elegant betel nut palm (Areca catechu), a cycad now known as Encephalartos caffer (formerly Zamia elliptica), a majestic white fig tree (Ficus virens), and finally, a tamarind tree bearing its distinctive pods (Tamarindus indica). The top section of the print displays the edible fruits of the calabash, fig, and tamarind trees. This exquisite illustration is sourced from Encyclopaedia Metropolitana, an esteemed London-based encyclopedia published between 1817 and 1845. Comprising thirty volumes with over 22,000 pages and 565 plates, this encyclopedia was renowned for its comprehensive coverage across various disciplines. Through this artwork's intricate details and botanical accuracy, we are transported back in time to witness nature's wonders as observed by British botanists during the early 19th century. It serves as both an aesthetic delight and an invaluable historical record of these tropical flora.
