TEM of adenovirus particles

Transmission electron micrograph of Adeno viruses, cause of infection to the upper respiratory tract, the symptoms of which resemble a common cold. The virus contains double-stranded (DNA) surrounded by a protein capsid (coat), which is composed of 252 capsomers (subunits seen as tiny ovals) arranged into an icosahedron, or 20 faced figure. 12 of these capsomers are surrounded by five neighbours & are called pentons. They consist of a base and a sticklike projection (unseen here). To reproduce viruses must take control of the genetic machinery of another cell (in this case animal cells). Mag: X500, 000 (at 10x8 size)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate structure of adenovirus particles. Adeno viruses are known to cause infections in the upper respiratory tract, often presenting symptoms similar to a common cold. The image reveals a transmission electron micrograph, allowing us to delve into the microscopic world of these tiny viral invaders. The virus is composed of double-stranded DNA encased within a protein capsid or coat. This protective layer consists of 252 capsomers, which can be observed as minuscule ovals forming an icosahedron - a twenty-faced figure. Among these capsomers, twelve are surrounded by five neighboring units and are referred to as pentons. Although unseen in this particular image, pentons possess both a base and sticklike projection. To propagate themselves, viruses must hijack the genetic machinery of host cells; in this case, animal cells become their unsuspecting victims. At an impressive magnification level of X500,000 (at 10x8 size), we gain insight into the intricacies that enable adenoviruses' survival and replication. This visually stunning photograph not only highlights the beauty found within scientific research but also serves as a reminder of how even seemingly insignificant organisms like viruses can have profound effects on our health and well-being.
