Sundial, RHS Garden Rosemoor, Devon, UK
Garden sundial. This sundial is used to measure time by the position of the sun. The shadow cast on the dial face points to indicate the hour of the day. The shadow is created by the sunlight falling on a triangular piece of slate (top) that sticks outwards from the face. The sun can be seen as a tiny spot reflected on the point of the slate triangle. Here, there are two sundials because the sun is at a different elevation throughout the year. The top sundial is used from 21st December to 21st June and the bottom sundial is used from 21st June to 21st December. Photographed in the RHS Gardens Rosemoor, Devon, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning sundial nestled within the picturesque RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon, UK. Serving as both a decorative ornament and an astronomical instrument, this unique garden sundial measures time by utilizing the position of the sun. The dial face features numbers and digits that are used as indicators for each hour of the day, while a shadow cast on the face points to indicate the current time. This shadow is created by sunlight falling on a triangular piece of slate protruding from the top of the dial. What makes this particular sundial even more fascinating is its dual functionality. Due to variations in sun elevation throughout the year, there are two separate dials present. From 21st December to 21st June, one can rely on the top sundial for accurate time measurement, whereas from 21st June to 21st December, it is necessary to refer to the bottom sundial. The photograph beautifully captures not only these intricate details but also reveals a tiny spot reflecting sunlight at the tip of each slate triangle – representing our mighty source of light itself: The Sun. With its historical significance and horticultural charm, this English garden treasure serves as a reminder of how humans have long sought innovative ways to measure time using celestial cues.
