Sun valve C014 / 1499

Sun valve (left) on a routing beacon. A Sun valve consists of a central blackened metal rod, surrounded by three polished rods, all enclosed in a glass tube. When the Sun rises the blackened rod heats up and expands to become slightly longer than the polished rods. The expansion triggers a device to shut of gas flow to the beacon. As the Sun sets the blackened rod contracts, starting the flow of gas again. The Sun valve was invented by the Swedish industrialist Gustaf Dalen in 1907, initially for use in lighthouses. Photographed in the USA. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY/ SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate design of a Sun valve, an ingenious invention by Swedish industrialist Gustaf Dalen in 1907. The image captures a Sun valve positioned on a routing beacon, highlighting its essential role in controlling gas flow to the beacon based on sunlight conditions. The Sun valve consists of a central blackened metal rod surrounded by three polished rods, all enclosed within a glass tube. As the Sun rises, its rays heat up the blackened rod causing it to expand slightly longer than the polished rods. This expansion triggers a mechanism that shuts off gas flow to the beacon, ensuring efficient energy consumption during daylight hours. Gustaf Dalen initially developed this remarkable technology for use in lighthouses but its applications extended far beyond that. The photograph was taken in the United States and exemplifies how this engineering marvel transcended borders and found utility across North America. The monochromatic aesthetic adds depth and nostalgia to this historical artifact of technological innovation. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our constant pursuit of finding practical solutions for everyday challenges. Preserved by the New York Public Library's Science Photo Library collection, this image offers us an intriguing glimpse into history while reminding us of how advancements like these have shaped our modern world.
