Stubble hair, SEM

Stubble hair and skin. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of stubble hair growing from the surface of human skin. The shafts of hair (purple) grow from their individual hair follicles (not seen) below the surface of the skin (orange). The cleanly cut ends of the hair shafts indicate that they have been cut, probably with a razor. Hair is made up of a fibrous protein called keratin. The outermost skin layer, the stratum corneum, also consists of keratinized dead cells that detach from the body. The squamous (flattened) cells that make up the stratum corneum arise from the lower, living layers of skin. Magnification: x40 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate details of stubble hair and skin at a microscopic level. The image, taken using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals the fascinating structure of human hair follicles and their growth on the surface of our skin. The purple shafts of hair are seen emerging from individual hair follicles beneath the orange-colored skin. The clean-cut ends indicate that these hairs have been recently shaved, most likely with a razor. Composed primarily of keratin, a fibrous protein, each strand is meticulously captured in this high-resolution photograph. Notably, this SEM image also highlights the outermost layer of our skin called the stratum corneum. This layer consists of keratinized dead cells that naturally detach from our bodies over time. It's interesting to note that these flattened squamous cells originate from deeper layers of living skin. With a magnification factor of x40 at 6x7cm size, this print provides an extraordinary glimpse into the normal anatomy and healthy regrowth process within our epidermis. Beyond its scientific significance, it offers viewers an appreciation for the complexity and beauty found within even seemingly mundane aspects like stubble hair.
