Stoplight parrotfish

Stoplight parrotfish (Sparisoma viride) on a coral reef. This fish inhabits coral reefs in the tropical western Atlantic, from Florida, USA, to Brazil. It feeds on algae and corals and can reach 64 centimetres in length. The colouration of this fish indicates that it is an adult, but not the dominant male. The stoplight parrotfish is a protogynous hermaphrodite: all young fish are female. They turn male as they grow, but only one becomes the dominant supermale, who develops a striking green colour (see image Z605/1419). The supermale has his choice of breeding partners. Photographed off Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea
