Sputnik 2, Soviet spacecraft

Sputnik 2, Soviet spacecraft. This was the second spacecraft to orbit the Earth, doing so on 3 November 1957. This cone-shaped spacecraft was 4 metres high and 2 metres across at the base. It was this spacecraft that carried the dog Laika into space, with the dog dying a few hours after launch. The spacecraft burnt up on re-entry on 14 April 1958, after 162 days in orbit. This is an exhibition model, photographed in Russia in 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Sputnik 2, a Soviet spacecraft that made history on November 3,1957. Standing tall at four meters high and two meters across at the base, this cone-shaped marvel became the second spacecraft to orbit our planet. However, its significance goes beyond mere technological achievement. Sputnik 2 forever etched its name in space exploration as it carried an innocent passenger into the unknown depths of space - Laika, a brave dog. Tragically, just hours after launch, Laika's journey came to a heartbreaking end. Nevertheless, her sacrifice paved the way for future advancements in manned space missions. The exhibition model captured in this photograph takes us back to Russia in 1972 when visitors could marvel at this symbol of scientific progress firsthand. It serves as a poignant reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and ambition during one of history's most intense periods – the Space Race between superpowers. With its eventual demise on April 14th, 1958 upon re-entry after an impressive 162 days in orbit, Sputnik 2 left an indelible mark on both Russian and global history. This image encapsulates not only a pivotal moment in time but also represents mankind's insatiable curiosity about what lies beyond our earthly bounds. Displayed proudly within museum walls today, this historical artifact stands as testament to human ingenuity and serves as a solemn tribute to Laika – forever remembered as the first animal to venture into outer space
