Sputnik 1 satellite, composite image

Sputnik 1. Composite image of Sputnik 1, the worlds first artificial satellite against a backdrop of the Moon above Earths horizon. The Sun and the Earth are reflected on the satellites surface. Sputnik 1 was launched on 4th October 1957 by the former Soviet Union. The name Sputnik is Russian for travel companion or satellite. The body was a highly polished aluminium alloy sphere which measured 58 centimetres in diameter and weighed 83.5 kilograms. It also had four long antennas attached. Sputnik 1 transmitted radio signals back to earth for a period of 21 days. The success of Sputnik 1 prompted the US government to enter the Space Race with the launch of Explorer-1 four months later

EDITORS COMMENTS
This composite image showcases the iconic Sputnik 1 satellite, the first-ever artificial satellite to orbit Earth. Against a stunning backdrop of the Moon rising above Earth's horizon, this artwork beautifully captures the historical significance and technological marvel of this groundbreaking achievement. Sputnik 1, launched on October 4th, 1957 by the former Soviet Union, was a polished aluminium alloy sphere measuring 58 centimetres in diameter and weighing 83.5 kilograms. Its four long antennas extended from its spherical body as it orbited our planet. The Sun and Earth are reflected on its surface, adding an ethereal touch to this extraordinary piece of human ingenuity. For a remarkable period of 21 days, Sputnik 1 transmitted radio signals back to Earth before eventually burning up upon re-entry into our atmosphere. Its success marked a pivotal moment in history that spurred the United States government to enter into a fierce Space Race with their launch of Explorer-1 just four months later. This composite image not only highlights the barren lunar terrain but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration beyond our home planet. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come technologically since that monumental day in October 1957 when Sputnik became mankind's first travel companion among the stars.
