Springtail

Springtail (Sminthurus sp.), artwork. This primitive wingless herbivore is approximately 2mm long. It has a hinged appendage on its abdomen called a furcula which enables it to move about a hundred times its body length in one leap. To move, the furcula (far right) is bent forward and held in place. When released, the springing action propells the animal through the air. Springtails belong to the order Collembola, rather than Insecta, having simple eyes and few abdominal segments. This specimen was found on a stinging nettle (Urtica dioica)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases a Springtail, a primitive wingless herbivore measuring just 2mm in length. The intricate illustration highlights the unique features of this tiny creature, including its hinged appendage called a furcula. This remarkable adaptation allows the Springtail to leap an astonishing distance of about a hundred times its own body length. In the image, you can see the furcula positioned at the far right, bent forward and ready for action. Unlike insects, Springtails belong to the order Collembola and possess simple eyes and few abdominal segments. Their ability to move swiftly through the air is truly mesmerizing. This particular specimen was discovered on a stinging nettle plant (Urtica dioica), showcasing its natural habitat. The artist's attention to detail brings this globular invertebrate to life with vibrant colors and meticulous precision. This scientific illustration not only captures the beauty of nature but also serves as an educational tool for those interested in zoology or entomology. With its false-colored depiction and informative diagrammatic style, this artwork provides insight into the fascinating world of arthropods while celebrating their diversity within our ecosystem.
