Spirochaete bacterium, Treponema

Spirochaete. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a spirochaete (Treponema sp. ) bacterium. This bacterium is from the mouth of a person with periodontal disease. This elongated spiral-shaped bacterium (spirochaete) lacks a rigid cell wall. Pathogenic species of Treponema include T. pallidum which causes syphilis; T. carateum which causes the skin disease " pinta" in tropical America; and T. pertenue which causes yaws in Africa. In syphilis, the bacteria may be found in most parts of the body. Negatively stained. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph of a Spirochaete bacterium, specifically Treponema. The elongated spiral-shaped structure of this bacterium is clearly visible, highlighting its unique morphology. Unlike most bacteria, this spirochaete lacks a rigid cell wall. Interestingly, this particular specimen was obtained from the mouth of an individual suffering from periodontal disease. This image serves as a reminder that even within our own bodies, microscopic organisms can wreak havoc and cause significant health issues. The genus Treponema includes several pathogenic species responsible for various diseases worldwide. Among them are T. pallidum, which causes the sexually transmitted infection syphilis; T. carateum, responsible for the skin disease known as "pinta" in tropical America; and T. pertenue, which causes yaws in Africa. Syphilis caused by T. pallidum can affect multiple organs throughout the body and has been extensively studied due to its historical significance and impact on public health. This stunning photograph was captured using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques and then coloured to enhance visibility and detail. The magnification level used remains unknown but undoubtedly provides an up-close look at these fascinating microbes that inhabit our mouths and contribute to oral health complications like periodontal disease.
