Spiral galaxy M101

Spiral galaxy M101, Hubble Space Telescope image. M101 is also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy. It lies around 25 million light years from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. The disc of the galaxy is some 170, 000 light years across, nearly twice as wide as our own Milky Way. The spiral arms appear blue as they contain hot young stars. The central nucleus is yellow as the stars there are older, and much of the light is obscured by dust. Released in 2006, this is the most detailed image of a galaxy ever taken by the HST. It is composed of 51 separate HST exposures taken between 1994 and 2003, which were superimposed on ground-based images. The full 562Mb image is available on request

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Spiral galaxy M101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy. Captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, this image is a testament to the wonders of our vast universe. Located approximately 25 million light years away in the constellation Ursa Major, M101 stretches across an impressive 170,000 light years - nearly twice the width of our own Milky Way. The spiral arms of this galaxy shine with a brilliant blue hue, hinting at their composition of hot young stars. In contrast, the central nucleus appears yellow due to its older star population and obscured light caused by dust particles. Released in 2006, this photograph represents a groundbreaking achievement for astrophysics. It is composed of an intricate composite made up of 51 separate exposures taken between 1994 and 2003 using HST's advanced technology. These images were then expertly superimposed on ground-based photographs to create this incredibly detailed representation. With its immense size and stunning features, Spiral galaxy M101 serves as a reminder that we are just one small part within an awe-inspiring cosmic tapestry. This extraordinary image invites us to contemplate our place in the universe and marvel at its infinite possibilities.
