Spinal vertebra

Spinal vertebra. Historical artwork of a vertebra (spinal bone) seen from the side. The rear of the spine is at right. This is a lumbar vertebra, one from the lower back. There are 24 vertebra in the main spinal column. Each one consists of a block of bone (left) that carries the weight supported by the spine, plus protruding bits of bone called processes (right). The processes are where the back ligaments and muscles attach to the spine. There are five lumbar vertebrae, and, unlike the thoracic vertebrae, they do not have areas where ribs attach. The spinal cord (which is not shown) would pass down centre, between the main part of the vertebra and its processes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artwork of a spinal vertebra seen from the side. The lumbar vertebra, specifically one from the lower back, takes center stage in this image. With 24 vertebrae comprising the main spinal column, each one is composed of a solid block of bone that bears the weight supported by the spine. Additionally, protruding bits of bone known as processes can be observed on the right side of this illustration. These processes play a crucial role as they serve as attachment points for ligaments and muscles that support and stabilize the back. Unlike thoracic vertebrae, which have areas where ribs attach, these five lumbar vertebrae lack such features. Although not depicted in this artwork, it's important to note that the spinal cord would pass down through the center between the main part of the vertebra and its processes. This thought-provoking print provides an insightful glimpse into human anatomy and biology while also offering a glimpse into our rich historical understanding of skeletal systems. It serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our bodies are and how every component plays an essential role in maintaining our overall health and well-being.
