Smooth trunkfish
Smooth trunkfish (Lactophrys triqueter). This fish inhabits reefs and coastal regions in the western Atlantic Ocean, from as far north as Canada to Brazil. It feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as crustaceans, shellfish, worms, sponges and sea squirts. It uncovers these from sandy seabeds by squirting a jet of water from its mouth. It can secrete a toxin when threatened that can be fatal for other fish. In aquaria this can cause the death of the entire population of a tank, including the trunkfish itself. It can reach a length of around 47 centimetres. Photographed off Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a Smooth trunkfish (Lactophrys triqueter). Found in the western Atlantic Ocean, this unique fish thrives in reefs and coastal regions spanning from Canada to Brazil. Its diet consists of various bottom-dwelling invertebrates like crustaceans, shellfish, worms, sponges, and sea squirts. To uncover its prey hidden beneath sandy seabeds, it employs an ingenious technique of squirting water jets from its mouth. However, this seemingly harmless creature possesses a potent defense mechanism. When threatened, it can release a toxin that proves fatal for other fish. This ability has dire consequences even within aquariums as the entire tank population may succumb to its venomous secretions. Measuring up to 47 centimeters long, this smooth trunkfish is truly a marvel of nature's design. The photograph was taken off Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles situated within the Caribbean Sea—an area renowned for its rich marine biodiversity. With elements encompassing nature's wonders and intricate defense mechanisms at play, this image encapsulates both scientific curiosity and appreciation for our diverse aquatic ecosystems. It serves as a reminder of how delicate yet fascinating life underwater can be while highlighting the importance of preserving these fragile environments for future generations to admire and study.
