Silicon crystal, macrophotograph F005 / 6928

Macrophotograph of a specimen of pure 99.999999 Silicon. This is the poly-crystal Silicon that is left at the bottom of the crucible after the single crystal is grown and removed. The pure Silicon crystal is cut with diamond saws into thin slices called wafers and the chips are photo etched onto the surface. The remaining poly crystal Silicon is now used primarily to make solar cells. There is enough Silicon in this piece to make many hundreds of computers. Object size: approximately 36x42 mm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This macrophotograph showcases a stunning print of a silicon crystal, revealing its intricate and mesmerizing details. The specimen captured in this image is pure 99.999999 silicon, which is the poly-crystal form left behind after growing and removing a single crystal from the crucible. To create computer chips, diamond saws are used to cut thin slices called wafers from these pure silicon crystals, onto which the chips are then photo etched. Measuring approximately 36x42 mm in size, this piece of poly-crystal silicon contains enough material to manufacture hundreds of computers. However, its primary use today lies in the production of solar cells. This versatile mineraloid serves as an essential component for conducting electricity within various technological devices. The photograph not only highlights the complexity and natural patterns present within the silicon crystal but also emphasizes its significance in electronics and modern technology. With its close-up view and high magnification capabilities, it allows us to appreciate the beauty hidden within these microscopic structures. Captured by PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this macrophoto offers a glimpse into the world of chemistry and materials science while showcasing one of nature's most vital elements for our digital age - Silicon.
