Section of brain showing intracerebral haemorrhage

Intracerebral haemorrhage. Section through brain tissue showing an area of bleeding (at centre left) within the cerebrum. Intracerebral haemo- rrhage is a principal mechanism by which stroke can occur. This large haemorrhage has caused brain tissue to be compressed and pushed out of shape. The ruptured artery usually results from hyper- tension (high blood pressure) or atherosclerosis (fatty deposits that narrow the arteries). Most incidents occur in the middle-aged or elderly. Symptoms include sudden headache, numbness, speech loss or facial paralysis, to coma and death. Large haemorrhages are usually fatal. Rehabilitation for the survivor is as for any type of stroke. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print from Science Photo Library showcases a section of the brain revealing an intracerebral haemorrhage. At the center left, we witness a distressing area of bleeding within the cerebrum, which has caused significant compression and distortion of brain tissue. Intracerebral haemorrhage is a primary mechanism leading to stroke, often resulting from hypertension or atherosclerosis. The gravity of this large haemorrhage cannot be understated; it has not only compromised brain function but also pushed the affected tissue out of its natural shape. Sadly, such incidents primarily afflict middle-aged and elderly individuals. The symptoms associated with intracerebral haemorrhages range from sudden headaches to numbness, speech loss, facial paralysis, coma, and even death. It is important to note that larger haemorrhages typically prove fatal. For survivors who endure these traumatic events, rehabilitation becomes crucial in their journey towards recovery—similar to any other type of stroke victim. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the intricate nature of our cerebral vascular system and highlights the devastating consequences when it fails us. Science Photo Library continues to provide invaluable visual resources in medical science by capturing moments like this one—a stark representation that reminds us how vital healthcare research and advancements are for preventing such conditions in our society today.
