Seahorses, X-ray
Seahorses, historical X-ray. Some of the seahorses (Hippocampus sp.) are long dead, and have been dried. These appear hollow. The others are freshly dead, and details of their internal anatomy can be seen, including some organs. The seaweeds seen around the sea horses are serrated wrack (Fucus serratus) at left and bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosus) at right. This image was made by E. C. le Grice, and was published in London Illustrated News on 12th August 1933

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate beauty of seahorses like never before. Taken by E. C. le Grice and published in the London Illustrated News on August 12th, 1933, this historical X-ray image offers a unique glimpse into the internal anatomy of these fascinating creatures. In this remarkable composition, we see a mix of long-dead dried seahorses alongside freshly deceased ones. The desiccated specimens appear hollow, their delicate forms preserved over time. On the other hand, the recently deceased seahorses reveal astonishing details of their internal organs through their translucent bodies. Adding to the visual allure are two species of seaweed surrounding these mesmerizing sea creatures. Serrated wrack (Fucus serratus) gracefully frames the left side while bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosus) adorns the right side of this composition. The monochrome aesthetic enhances every line and curve within this image, emphasizing both fragility and strength simultaneously. It serves as a testament to nature's intricacy and its ability to captivate our imagination across generations. This photograph is not just an artistic masterpiece but also holds immense scientific value for zoologists studying marine life. Its publication in one of London's most esteemed publications solidifies its significance in history as well. Science Photo Library proudly presents this extraordinary snapshot from 1933 that showcases not only seahorses' skeletal structure but also highlights their connection with underwater flora – an exquisite portrayal capturing both life and death beneath the waves.
