Created by artist John Collier, this hand-coloured aquatint captures Darwin's essence with remarkable precision. In fact, his son Francis Darwin hailed Collier's masterpiece as the finest representation of his father's countenance. Charles Robert Darwin, born on February 12th, 1809 and departing on April 19th, 1882, forever altered our understanding of life sciences through his theory of evolution by natural selection. This controversial idea remains one of science's greatest contributions to date. The intricacies depicted in this Victorian-era illustration highlight not only Darwin's genius but also his profound impact on human knowledge. As a biologist and zoologist aboard HMS Beagle during its historic voyage from 1831 to 1836, Darwin meticulously observed various species across different continents.
