False-colour SEM of human bronchial epithelium
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal lining, or epithelium, of the bronchial passages in the human lung. Clumps of fine hairs, called cilia, protrude from the tops of specialised epithelial cells. The micrograph also shows the round, smooth goblet cells whose function is to release mucus onto the surface of the epithelium. Rhythmic movements of the cilia serve to move bacteria & other particles away from the gas- exchanging parts of the lung & towards the throat where they can be swallowed or coughed up. Magnification: x275 at 35mm size. Pink tint. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 2.23, page 32

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the human bronchial epithelium, captured through a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image reveals the internal lining of the bronchial passages in our lungs with remarkable detail. One cannot help but be mesmerized by the clumps of delicate hairs known as cilia that gracefully protrude from specialized epithelial cells. These tiny structures play a vital role in maintaining respiratory health. Through rhythmic movements, they diligently sweep away bacteria and other particles from the gas-exchanging regions of our lungs towards our throat, where they can either be swallowed or coughed up. In addition to these elegant cilia, this SEM also highlights round and smooth goblet cells scattered throughout the bronchial epithelium. These unique cells are responsible for secreting mucus onto the surface of this lining. This protective layer helps trap foreign substances and aids in their removal. The pink tint adds an artistic touch to this scientific marvel, emphasizing its aesthetic appeal while still retaining its anatomical accuracy. With a magnification level of x275 at 35mm size, every minute detail is brought to life. This extraordinary photograph serves as a testament to both the complexity and elegance found within our own bodies. It reminds us of how intricately designed systems work together seamlessly to ensure our well-being on a microscopic scale.
