Schooling bigeye trevally
Schooling Bigeye trevally. The trevally or jackfish (Caranx sexfasciatus) congregates in large schools during the day normally along the edges of a reef wall in an area with the strongest current. The resulting mass of fish makes it difficult for predators such as sharks and tuna to focus on a single target. At night the school fragments to feed on smaller fish and crustaceans. It can reach lengths of 120 centimetres and weigh up to 18 kilograms. It inhabits tropical and subtropical coastal waters and is regarded as an excellent human food source. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing phenomenon of schooling bigeye trevally. The image captures a vibrant underwater scene, where these magnificent fish gather in large schools along the edges of a reef wall. With their sleek bodies and striking blue coloration, the bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) creates an awe-inspiring spectacle. During daylight hours, these intelligent creatures form massive groups that serve as a defense mechanism against predators like sharks and tuna. By creating such a dense mass of fish, it becomes challenging for predators to single out an individual target. However, as night falls, this tightly knit school fragments into smaller groups to feed on smaller fish and crustaceans. Growing up to 120 centimeters in length and weighing up to 18 kilograms, the bigeye trevally is not only visually stunning but also highly valued as a food source by humans. Inhabiting tropical and subtropical coastal waters across Asia's Indo-Pacific region, they are known for their agility and adaptability. This remarkable photograph was taken at Pulau Kapalai in Sabah, Malaysia—an area renowned for its rich marine biodiversity. It offers us a glimpse into the fascinating world of marine biology while highlighting nature's intricate beauty beneath the waves.
