Schistosome flukes mating, micrograph C014 / 4867

Schistosome flukes mating. Light micrograph of Schistosoma japonicum fluke worms mating. The male is the smaller animal at centre. These parasitic trematodes (flatworms) are a cause of schistosomiasis in humans. They live in the veins around the large intestine, anchoring themselves to the wall of the blood vessel with several suckers (one seen at centre), and feeding on their hosts blood. The worms cause fever and abdominal pain, and the eggs produced by the female worm can form obstructions of tissues known as granulomas

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate mating ritual of Schistosome flukes, specifically Schistosoma japonicum. The image, captured under a light microscope, reveals the male and female worms engaged in copulation. Positioned at the center is the smaller male worm, while the larger female worm can be observed nearby. These parasitic trematodes are responsible for causing schistosomiasis, a debilitating disease in humans. They reside within the veins surrounding the large intestine and firmly attach themselves to blood vessel walls using multiple suckers (one clearly visible at center). Feeding on their host's blood sustains these worms but results in symptoms such as fever and abdominal pain for infected individuals. The eggs produced by the female worm have significant consequences as they can form obstructions known as granulomas within tissues. This microscopic view provides an intimate look into their reproductive process while shedding light on their anatomical features. The black background accentuates every detail of this biological marvel, allowing us to appreciate nature's complexity even at its smallest scale. As we delve into this mesmerizing microcosm of life, we gain insight into pathogenic organisms like these flatworms that thrive through parasitism. This photograph serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to understand and combat diseases caused by pathogens like Schistosome flukes - not only for wildlife preservation but also for human health worldwide.
