River Nile

River Nile, true-colour satellite image. North is at top. Water is blue, deserts are brown, clouds are white. The lower reaches of the River Nile flow through Egypts deserts before reaching the Mediterranean coast, forming a delta (triangular, upper centre). Lake Nasser (lower centre) formed behind the Aswan Dam. The Red Sea (centre right) divides into two gulfs either side of the Sinai Peninsula. The Gulf of Suez (left) leads to the Suez Canal. The Gulf of Aqaba (right) points towards Israel, with Jordan and Saudi Arabia to its right. EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking true-color satellite image captures the majestic River Nile, flowing through Egypt's arid deserts before gracefully meeting the Mediterranean coast. The vibrant blue waters of the river stand in stark contrast to the surrounding brown desert landscape, while fluffy white clouds dot the sky above. At its lower reaches, the Nile forms a magnificent triangular delta that dominates the upper center of this image. Intriguingly, Lake Nasser can be seen nestled at the lower center of this photograph. This vast body of water was formed behind the Aswan Dam and serves as an important reservoir for Egypt. To its right lies the mesmerizing Red Sea, which splits into two gulfs on either side of Sinai Peninsula - namely, Gulf of Suez on the left and Gulf of Aqaba on the right. The significance of this region becomes evident as we observe how these bodies of water connect various countries together. The Gulf of Suez leads to one of humanity's greatest engineering marvels: The Suez Canal. On its right is another gateway -the Gulf Aqaba- pointing towards Israel with Jordan and Saudi Arabia flanking it. Captured by NASA's Terra satellite equipped with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) technology on February 28th, 2000; this stunning snapshot showcases not only Earth's natural beauty but also highlights our ability to explore and understand our planet from space using advanced spectrometer imagery like MODIS.
