Rhinoceros conservation C015 / 0662
Rhinoceros conservation, South Africa. A black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) has had its horns removed by rangers at a private game reserve as a deterrent to poaching. The horn, which is made entirely from keratin protein, is removed with a chainsaw ten centimetres above the base. It is illegal to trade rhinoceros horns, however they fetch a very high price on the black market. They are used as ornaments and for some traditional medicines. Despite horn removal, rhinoceroses are still killed by poachers for the remaining horn stub or as an act of vengeance

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the efforts of rhinoceros conservation in South Africa. In this image, a black rhinoceros stands proudly with its horns removed by rangers at a private game reserve. The removal of these majestic creatures' horns serves as a powerful deterrent against poaching, which has become an alarming threat to their existence. The horn, composed entirely of keratin protein, is carefully severed ten centimeters above the base using a chainsaw. Despite being illegal to trade rhinoceros horns, they continue to fetch exorbitant prices on the black market due to their use in ornaments and traditional medicines. However, even after undergoing dehorning procedures like this one, rhinos are still targeted by poachers who seek out the remaining horn stub or commit acts of vengeance. This unfortunate reality highlights the ongoing battle faced by those dedicated to protecting these magnificent animals. Set against the picturesque backdrop of South Africa's countryside and wildlife-rich landscapes, this photograph showcases both the resilience and vulnerability of African fauna. It serves as a poignant reminder that conservation efforts are crucial for preserving our planet's biodiversity in the 21st century. Photographed by Louise Murray from Science Photo Library, this image symbolizes hope amidst adversity while shedding light on the tireless work carried out by organizations such as Protrack Anti Rhino Poaching Team in safeguarding these extraordinary creatures for future generations.
