EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the frontispiece of Rantzaus astrology book, a remarkable piece of art from the 1584 third edition of Catalogus imperatorum, regum ac virorum illustrium. Created by Heinrich von Rantzau, a renowned German author and astrologer, this intricate illustration showcases Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child across a river. The image is adorned with a circular inscription featuring an inspiring biblical quote in Latin from Exodus: "The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation". This powerful message adds depth to the artwork's religious significance. Henrik Rantzau's work beautifully combines elements of Christian history and astrology. The inclusion of Saint Christopher symbolizes his role as the patron saint of travelers while also representing humanity's journey towards salvation. Meanwhile, the presence of astrological references highlights Rantzau's exploration of celestial influences on human lives. The print itself exudes an air of antiquity with its monochrome palette and intricately decorated border. It transports viewers back to the 16th century when this masterpiece was first published. Todd-White Art Photography has skillfully captured every detail in this historical gem. Through their lens, we can appreciate not only the artistic beauty but also gain insight into how religion, history, and astrology intertwined during that era.
