Preserved body of the Pazyryk Ice Maiden

Ice Maiden. Preserved skull of the Pazyryk " Ice Maiden", a young woman found frozen in ice on the Ukok plain in the Altai mountains of central Asia. The body is about 2500 years old and some parts are so well preserved that tattoos can still be seen on her skin. She was preserved because water seeped into her burial chamber and then froze. A silk dress, an elaborate headdress, gilded ornaments, a hand mirror of polished metal, and sacrificial animals had been buried with her, suggesting that she had a high rank amongst the nomadic Pazyryk people. The " Ice Maiden" was discovered in 1993 by a Russian team led by Natalaya Polosmak

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the preserved body of the Pazyryk Ice Maiden, a young woman who was discovered frozen in ice on the Ukok plain in the Altai mountains of central Asia. Dating back approximately 2500 years, her remarkably well-preserved remains offer a fascinating glimpse into ancient history. The image captures her preserved skull, which reveals intricate details and provides valuable insights for anthropology and paleontology. The Ice Maiden's remarkable preservation is attributed to water seeping into her burial chamber and subsequently freezing. As a result, she has become an extraordinary archaeological find with intact tattoos still visible on her skin. This suggests that she held significant status among the nomadic Pazyryk people. Accompanying this ancient mummy were various artifacts that further emphasize her high rank within society. These include a silk dress, an elaborate headdress, gilded ornaments, a hand mirror made of polished metal, and sacrificial animals. Discovered by Natalaya Polosmak and her Russian team in 1993, this finding has captivated scientists worldwide. It serves as a testament to human curiosity about our past and offers invaluable information about our ancestors' way of life. This print from Science Photo Library allows us to marvel at this incredible discovery while appreciating its scientific significance in fields such as paleoanthropology and palaeontology.
